Question 1 - In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Used in My Products
Music Video
Conventions: Stock CharactersThe main character in my music video is a young adult female. I used her because she belongs to the social group, and in my research I found that music videos for this genre generally use actors/actresses that belong to their target audience. Some of her behaviour in the music video is especially put in to emphasise that she belongs to this social group.
Also, in the party scenes, there is a group of young adults (male and female). This is to further support the idea of having the target audience in the music video. In the research I did, two of the music videos had party/raves with a lot of people of the social group, I have tried to imitate this. |
Conventions: Stock EventsThe stock events in my music video are the girl being woken up by her alarm at 9:15 am, then getting up and getting ready. Once she is ready we see her dancing and putting on her music. The viewer then sees several scenes from party's mixed in with shots of the girl dancing and drinking on her own. When the first set of party scenes are over, we see her alarm go off again at 9:15 am, once again she gets up, she is then seen drinking and dancing, after which there is more shots of partying. This is meant to display the start of yet another day, but repeated almost the same as the day before, with recurring actions. Some of the shots are mixed into an odd order, with slow motion or speeding up, to show that the days are becoming blurred into one recurring set of scenes. The end scenes show her dancing alone in slow motion, this displays the thole her incessant lifestyle. After which she gets back into bed, ending the cycle.

Conventions: PropsI used many props in this music video, some are just to add to the setting (e.g. the scenes of the messy floor) and others are actually used. I tried to get as many 'stereotypically teenage' props in the music video. Some of the props used include: alcohol bottle, mobile phone, ipod, makeup, etc. This is aimed to appeal to the target audience, and are similar props to what I found in my research.

Conventions: CostumesThe main character in my music video is wearing clothes that are stereotypically often seen on a young person. In the music videos I researched, the main character's costumes were often not extravagant. They wore normal clothing, however in the party scenes, the people are dressed more extravagantly. In my party scenes you cannot clearly see the costumes, but the ones worn are more extravagant than that of the main character throughout. I also decided on a somewhat more childlike top, to show that although the person is a young adult, she is still not a 'full adult' and has some childlike qualities.
|
Conventions: SettingsThe settings I used were a bedroom (with a lot of mess), and the party. In the party scenes you cannot really see the setting that well, but this is how the partys in my research were also. The messy bedroom shows further the lifestyle of this young adult, which is to party every night.

Codes: Camera Shot/Angle/MovementOne of the first shots in my music video is a panning/tracking motion across the bed, showing the girl asleep, this begins to set the scene. Most of the shots throughout the music video are still shots, with the action in the scene being more important than the shot itself. However, I have used some 'canted' shots when the girl is asleep, this is too suggest that she is maybe still drunk from the night before. This is similar to what some of the music videos I researched did. For instance in 'Ghosts N' Stuff' in the hallway, as the shot is blurred/unfocused and moving about a lot.

Codes: EditingAs in the music videos I researched, the parts of my music video, where the music gets faster, I have also made the editing faster, I have also made these parts the party scenes. Most of the shots are in a chronological order, however since the storyline repeats itself, so do some of the shots, and they are not always in the expected order. For some of the shots I used I had to increase the contrast/brightness levels, and in other shots I have used a 'black and white tint' - this is to show the boring, colourless part of her day in contrast to her overly vibrant nightlife.

^^ To listen to the song I used, please go on to the website homepage I created, on the bottom right hand side there is a playlist, 'Nine Fifteen Ft. Jess' is the official song from the artist's official SoundCloud.
|
Codes: SoundAs in the music videos I have researched, the only sound throughout the entirety of my music video, is the song itself. However, at the start and end of the music video there is a few seconds with no sound.
|
Codes: LightingFor the scenes in the bedroom, I have just used the light from the lamps, as this is what was done in the music videos I researched. The party scenes have strobe lights, etc, and with the smoke in the room, these lights looked very impressive. The lights add to the party feel in the party scenes, and their vibrant colours surround the silhouetted people dancing in front of them.
